Tactical Practice, December 2003

Topic: Cover vs. Concealment

December's Tactical Practice session was a review of the April 11, 1986 FBI shootout with two bank robbers in Florida. After a discussion on what Bob felt were the major shortcomings of the tactics used by the FBI in the takedown we reviewed the official FBI video that detailed through re-enactment and survivor testimony the events leading up to the shootout, the shootout itself and the post mortem. We identified the poor use of cover vs. concealment issues that ultimately left two FBI Special Agents dead and several others wounded.

From there we moved to the range where Bob set up some simple barriers for us to practice using as cover and concealment while engaging targets in a live fire exercise. We later did some close encounter scenarios where we made contact, moved behind cover and engaged targets. Finally we did one hand shooting from ever increasing distances. It was a very good session and well attended. Below are a few of the pictures taken. The first few are of the participants loading up, then Bob setting up the barriers and finally some of the live fire exercises.
