September's Survival Series was another excellent scenario from the minds of Bob Makowski and Rich Tremblay. This series of encounters was based upon the post-hurricane Katrina events that unfolded in New Orleans. With the law all but gone reports of roving bands of looters, rapists and murderers were not uncommon. It was a chilling reminder of just how close to chaos our 'civilized' society really is. This Survival Series was great because it not only tested our tactical skills and decision making but also threw in other real-life
dilemmas to make those decisions more difficult. As Bob explained to one student, the object was not just to physically survive, but to survive morally, legally and ethically as well.
Turnout was good with a mix of shooters young and old, male and female, experienced and novice. Upon arriving we were met with the following paper detailing the scenario:
For those whom have never attended a Survivor Series it's
a great way to practice the skills you've learned in Tactical Practice or
Personal Protection courses. We ask that the first timers show up later so the
'old hats' can go through the course first. Once the veterans are done the new
folk are taken down and walked through the entire course and shown what will
happen but it is up to each shooter to solve the problem in their own way. There
are certified instructors on hand helping with at least 1 in arm's reach to keep
things running smooth and safe. This is a live fire exercise! Gun muzzles are
always kept pointing towards the backstop. All range safety rules are observed.
Safety is our first and foremost priority.
This page is a little different than the Tactical Practice pages or the previous Survival Series page. I followed 4 different shooters through their live-fire course taking pictures as they went.
